I use surface mount L.E.D. of the same package as the stock L.E.D.. I simply exchange the stock L.E.D. with a L.E.D. of your color. I can not advise you on the resistance value used as L.E.D. specifications vary and therefore the required resistance varies. The resistors used are exchanged with the stock resistors and are obviously of the same package as the stock resistors. I do not use the wrong package component. Only components that are correct and keep the unit stock. I don't like hacking things up with chainsaws and jackhammers.
