I have it someplace and it is registered but from what I see on the Butel site, it looks like it will not run on Win10 so I have not bothered to look for my copy. Since the BC-780 scanner was launched in 1999, and was very popular, because it was a great advance in scanner technology, with many terrific features. But technology's ongoing progress made this model unusable for newer radio systems. So after a period of years, some software developers stopped providing updates to their programming software for the 780. Most, if not all of them are spending their time and energy making software for more recent scanners. 2. Many recent computers do not have a serial port. If your computer does not have a serial port, you'll have to get a USB to serial converter to connect a programming cable to your computer. You can buy these from stores or online vendors. If your're a hardcore cheapskate like me, rather than buy the cable at a store, you will look for these adapters at hamfests, and buy them for a dollar or 2. I've found that a web search will find the software drivers for these adapters, and I have had good success doing this. In some cases, newer versions of Windows will recognize the cable, and load the proper drivers for it. However, one no-name USB to serial cable I bought at a hamfest would not work with either the CD-ROM or downloaded driver, and indicated a cable malfunction. Many scanner hobbyist web posts on USB cable difficulties state that the problems are mostly caused by incorrect or outdated drivers. I have not had a problem using a USB cable with either XP, Vista, Windows 7 and Windows 10. If you have issues, you likely have driver problem or port selection problem. 3. Most software for the BC-780 was made in the Windows 98 and XP era, and some brands of scanner software likely won't work with Windows Vista or newer versions of Windows. 4. The freeware/shareware AFS 780 was available at one time on the web. I used it for awhile, but I have not been able to find any web links for it for a few years. 5. The other brands of software I've used for my beloved 780's are Scancat from Computer Aided Technologies, and ARC 780 by Butel Software. ProScan and ARC 780 are the best software to use with this radio. If I recall correctly, ProScan also allows you to remotely control the scanner by computer. 6. Because Uniden stopped providing parts and service for this scanner years ago, and because this model is not compatible with the new frequency plan for rebanded 800 MHz Motorola trunk systems (I've found that my 780 will recognize about 60-70% of the rebanded channels on local systems), and because the 5 generations of Uniden base/mobile scanners since the 780 are more sensitive and decode P25 digital, the demand and value for this model have declined, although the 780 still does many scanning functions very well.
