WI State Patrol Gets Upgrade Wisconsin Nov 5, 2005 The State Patrol started watching Wisconsin's roads back in 1939, with only a few troopers. Today, 400 troopers are spread across the state. Over the past 66 years, the patrol has undergone many changes, but probably none as dramatic as what its preparing to do this week. It's such a big jump that some patrolmen aren't quite sure how they'll handle it. Gone will be the days of primarily using police radios or written tickets because now all squad cards will on online while they're out on the road. The State Patrol will now be linked by computers and a GPS satellite system, letting officers and the dispatch center know where all the units are at all times. And regular tickets will become a thing of the past, as a computer will now simply print out an easy to read receipt. The moves are designed to limit radio traffic and clutter, which will help patrols respond even faster to an accident scene. Wisconsin's State Patrol is among a small number of law enforcement agencies across the country to put some of these new technological tools to use. All state patrolmen will be online by the end of the month, with out local patrols based out of Tomah set to go online this week. _______________ Any members with comments?
