Hello, I would suggest a discone antenna available at Radio Shack or scanner outlets on the internet, that should give you multiband coverage. If you listen to repeaters, it will work out OK, if you want to listen to direct (simplex) or fireground operations unless they are local you won't hear everything. It's best to have a home scanner, one in the mobile, and handhelds. Can't have enough radios in my opinion. Have fun from Northern Illinois...
