 The mount kit is for VHF/UHF and when the antenna in mounted on say a metal balcony rail.
 

 If you are mounting it on your house or even say a metal saw horse (like Stanley Tools makes), you will need a counterpoise still.  I have used the saw horse approach in the past and used a MFJ 931 artificial ground as the counterpoise.  Worked fine.  I do suggest that the counterpoise wire be several feet off the ground for best results, i.e., laying on the ground isn't good.  Tuning I note is more time consuming because the 931 is tuned for the operating band.  If the SWR is too high, the FT-100D tuning will fail.  Once in the ballpark, tune the 931 and then let the FT-100D tune the ATAS again.  Results are worth the effort.   Once you have figured out the 931 setting for the various bands, you set the 931 to the new band you want to QSY to and all will be quick and good.
