You lost me at "Stumps" Dave.  HI HI
In baseball, if you strike out, it means you swung at the ball 3 times and missed it all 3 times or the umpire deemed that three pitches were within the strike zone but the batter didn't swing or a combination of those occurs 3 times.
But then there's the scenario of when the first two swings are hit foul, they are also considered strikes.
And if you're not confused by now, it just means you're not paying attention.

Probably "run out" i.e. the stumps are hit before the batter reaches the 
crease; just one of a dozen ways by which you can be "out", and there's 
some pretty obscure ones... Hit wicket, handle ball, obstruct fielder, 
taking too !@#$% long to score, etc.
