Thanks, Richard!  3mm it is, although the threaded portion is deep inside the hole for the set screw in the knob, and the portion outside the threaded part accepts a 7mm screw, but has no threads, so I got frustrated trying varying set screw sizes before as you had said, I found 3mm works.
