I agree 100%! If one must run their radio at 100 watts continuously, they s=
hould make sure to have lots of spare finals and the=20
knowledge to install as needed, which will surely be the case.
Best way for =E2=80=98high power=E2=80=99 is to use a linear amplifier, tha=
t=E2=80=99s what they are for.

I wouldn=E2=80=99t run the FT-100 or for that matter any 100 watt class rad=
io at 100 watts for any digital modes. The duty cycle for digital transmi=
ssions is very high good way to fry your finals in short order. QRP is the=
way to go for the modern digital modes. I don=E2=80=99t operate any digita=
l modes, (except the original one - CW Morse!), but from what I hear and se=
e in my SDR spectral and waterfall displays, the are a lot of digi stations=
running WAY to much power...ruins it for those who are doing it the right =
way.=20
As for the effectiveness of QRP on digital modes, back in the late 80s I ra=
n AMTOR using a PK232, an IBM PC Portable, Heath SB line and a three elemen=
t tribander. On an AMTOR QSO on 20 meters with an Australian station, we k=
ept dialing back our power levels to see the minimum required to maintain a=
solid link with no re-sends of data. Got down to about a quarter of a wat=
t to the antennas, tribanders on both ends of the link.
