If I had a PC without an RS232 serial port, I would purchase a serial port card as you propose. My older PC has 2 serial ports and I bought a card with extra serial ports anyway because I have several peripherals which require a serial port. In addition, I can use an external switch box to serve even more devices on a single serial port.
