According to the manual on page 43...
2.2 V DC ~ 3.5 V DC, inner battery (nominal: 3.0 V DC)
9.0 V DC ~ 16.0 V DC (Ext DC)

I'd go with the 9.0 V setting

I have a universal ac adapter that has following settings,

Input 120v, 60Hz, 7W
Output 1.5,3,4.5,6,7.5,9,12 volt DC current 300mA

I dont want to mess up the settings or frequencies which is what 
happened when my batteries died and I had to reprogram so before I 
test the AC adapter without batteries, I would like to know what is 
the best DC setting to use.
