Just a little tidbit...

I have one, but have not yet tried to use, and adapter cable from FTDI. 
It's a USB to TTL level converter, which should work fine.  The FTDI
cable provides a virtual com port, so the software (either one)
shouldn't know the difference.  The supplied connector on the cable  is
a 3 conductor 1/8 inch standard audio jack.

As my laptop doesn't have a legacy serial port, it would be nice to have
the USB option.
