Hi Dave
It dosen't work how you are thinking..
The scan delay is how long the VR-500 will receive a signal, in normal
scanning mode, before it continues to scan regardless of activity.

Page three of the manual:
http://kb2ljj.serveftp.com/yaesus/VR-500%20Operating%20Manual.pdf
Is an overview of the display.

While scanning, with NO scan type selected, the scan delay timer is active.
BS or Busy scan, will hold on a channel while it is active then continue
scanning = most like a "real scanner".
HS or Hold scan, will STOP on a channel and needs to be manually started
again.

While pressing and holding the function key, press the 3[SCH/SCN] key to
scroll through the scanning types.

Subject: [VR-500] PRO39 and VR-500

Hello to all. I've just had my new VR500 for about a week and am still
learning. I ran the 2 radios side by side and found the VR started
scanning way before the transmission was complete . The PRO operated as
it should. The delay on the VR is still at the 5 sec default and I do
not have preferential channels set up. I'm using ADMS-3 with a USB to
input.
Any ideas ?
