I can't help you directly, but are you sure, it's the speaker wire?

Recently I've had the same problem: It results in some dust - or
oxidation as you assume - in the earphone jacket, just switching 
the speaker sometimes off, as if there was a plug in it.

I've used some contact cleaner spray and plugging/unplugging an 
earphone several times to solve that problem.
