Hi Chuck,

While getting pretty old, the VR-500 is still a nice *analog* scanning receiver.
Just realize you won't be able to monitor any digital transmissions or follow
any trunked radio system communications with it.

For a general pocket-size portable wide-coverage receiver, the VR-500 is still a
nice choice. I still take mine on trips. Shop around online, and maybe even
consider buying a used one if cost is an issue.

Bear in mind for not much more $ you can get a Kenwood TH-F6A or some other
wide-coverage radio that also transmits on multiple bands.

Cheers,

-Ed
