Chuck,
I remember when this feature was announced to the list some years back, 
it was quite a hit. It really made a difference in the usefulness of the 
VR-500 on shortwave. There may be more info in the archives if you dig 
back that far, but I'm not sure it was ever determined why it isn't 
mentioned in the manual.

I have a suspicion that it didn't make it through the translation 
process from Japanese to English.
