Help, I cant download the pocket referance guide in microsoft word.

Hello ,Im new to the group and to computing. Can some one help me to download the quick reference guide's that are in the files section? I do not have microsoft word, and seems that is what you have to have to view the files. And I cant understand the instructions that came with my VR-500. They seem to be for someone who has already used a scanner before.
