I purchased a USB programming cable off ebay that supports several Yaesu radios . Ebay Item # 380163698408 , it comes with cable & driver disk. The cable has a 4 pin plug. I replaced that plug with a 3 pin stereo plug from Radioshack . After having communication problems with my PC and exhausted all efforts to get it to work I thought that I would give it a try on my Asus netbook .
After installing the drivers I plugged in the USB cable and connected the VR-500. It worked !! I was able to read and wright without errors. Not too bad for a cable that cost about 10.00 including shipping. I ordered another one for a backup and also to see if it will work without the plug modification . FYI *** My PC communication problem was coming from my cheap 7 port USB hub. ***
