Yes I have had exeactly the same issue with mine. I glued mine together and then went and tried several different brands of rechargeable batteries untill I found some that were the same as akalines. Tricky really....

I can't answer your questions as I just got mine, well a couple months 
ago, but sort of on the same subject, what is meant by "transmit" in the 
manual, this is only a receiver?
