Thanks to people on this list I've recontacted Yaesu EU and gave them exact=
Yaesu part number: S81000784, they were extremely helpful and in turn I bo=
ught 2 of them (just in case) which was cheap (~16 GBP with shipping).
Changing the encoder was quite harder then I expected, even while following=
that PDF, so I bailed out and gave it to more savvy friend to do it. He ma=
naged to change the encoder and I have working VR-500 again! :o)
A few notes on that PDF:
It's not 100% accurate, but helpful anyway.
The screws are extremely tight and their heads extremely soft, so be car=
eful not to ruin their heads with inappropriate tool.
You can remove LCD screen quite away from the encoder thus saving it fro=
m the heat while (un)soldering.
And last, between 6 soldering contacts of encoder there is a tiny SMD re=
sistor, so you have to be extremely careful.
