The VR-500 seems to have a slight drain on the batteries even when the power is off. I've had trouble with alkaline batteries (Duracells) leaking after several months. The cells also swell up lengthwise and crack the case around the ends of the batteries. The case back is still available from Yaesu parts, but be sure to order the little battery contact springs separately -- they don't come with the case. My solution to the problem was (a) don't buy Duracells, and (b) remove the batteries from anything that won't be used for a month.
