Paul,
I found the best compromise antenna for my VR500 was an MFJ 1717
flexible dual band antenna. It was long enough to pick up MW and some SW
stations as well as the 20-006, and flexible enough to leave on the
receiver. The 20-006 resonates in the VHF-low band, which makes
reception much better on (say) 42 MHz, but it's heavy and inflexible.
