Yes, most likely if the shaft broke, you would have to replace the entire component. In my case, the shaft just bent, and I was able to straighten it without snapping it off, but the plastic knob cracked in the process. Replacing the entire encoder does unfortunately require quite a bit of disassembly. The Yaesu part number for the encoder is S8100784 and the knob is S8001712. I don't know how much the encoder costs...I'd estimate something in the US$20 to $30 range. If you are technically experienced, you could probably handle it, but if not, you're better off sending back to Yaesu.
