Well I don't know anything about the icom R5, but I do have the VR 500 and 
I'm keeping mine.
It does practically everything you could want, AM, FM, LSB, USB, CW.  I 
think it's basically a scanner
with wide band coverage. The bandwidth is a little wide for SWLing. But 
there are 1000 memories and
it is programmable. You can enter the frequencies directly and/or store them 
in memory. You can scan memories
or just scan the vfo. There's also a knob you can turn to change frequency. 
There's also a knob to adjust the squelch, you
don't have to go into some damn menu.

I'm keeping mine!
