Hi Susan,

Welcome to the group! I'm new to this group too, as I just purchased a
VR-5000 also. There are several different software packages available
for this receiver from different vendors. If you would do an internet
search on "Yaesu VR-5000 software", you will be able to sort them out.
Most of the software is for memory management. I purchased software
called FTBVR5K via download from:

http://www.g4hfq.co.uk/ftbvr5k.html

This one seems to be as good as any, but I've not had a chance to do
extensive work with it yet. It has the common spread sheet type layout,
and you can upload and download the file from your receiver. There is
one software package that will allow you to operate your receiver live,
using your computer, but I consider that non-essential. I don't know of
any freeware for the receiver, but someone else may be able to comment
more on that.

You will also need a cable to connect your receiver to your computer.
The best type of cable is the type that you can plug into a USB port.
It has a serial conversion circuit built in to the cable so that you do
not have to use a serial port from the computer, as most computers no
longer have a serial port unless you install a serial card.

Hope this helps to get started. Programming the VR-5000 with the
front panel buttons is a very slow process. Enjoy your new radio!
