It is a bear to program but it is also one of the most sensitve receiver ever made, even at 2 Ghz .
There are re writes of the programming manual on the new. I have seen them. Try looking for one.
I love the radio but I can't help you from NH. be advised that there are also mistakes in the users manual so poke around the net and you'll find better documentation.
It's really not a scanner , but a damn good receiver. I have used the best agilent test equipment to do SINAD measurements and it beats everything else on the market today.
As well, I thought I'd change the SO-239 to a N connector but after measuring sensitivity I decided not to bother. It really should have an N connector Vs. the SO-239 but the performance is so good that I adopted my lifelong philosophy of "don't fix it unless it's broke"

I got a VR-5000 few weeks ago and its a little overwhelming, definitely the most complex receiver I ever owned or used. Any experienced users in North NJ/Eastern PA area willing to help out a new user for an hour or so? I'd buy coffee/donuts at panera bread ( panera has outlets and free wifi ). Maybe we can get a small gathering going?
