Hi there - I see on the schematic for the control unit there is a 7.2volt nicad at the lower left side drawn in in dotted lines as though it's an option. I have replaced similar backup batteries with 'supercaps' in the past and they work quite well, keeping the memories alive in my NRD515 receiver for more than a fortnight.
