I think the problem referred to is that of the VR-5000 losing its clock  
data if disconnected from the mains,  the memorised frequencies seem  to be 
stored in non-volatile devices so shouldn't be an issue.
 
I wasn't previously aware of the 7.2v Ni-Cad but online  comments suggest 
it's fitted to act as a supply buffer, to deal with  problems of the CPU 
resetting itself with supply glitches, rather than for data  retention.
