I had the same problem too, a few years ago. Sent it back to Yaesu, and they wanted even
more than that, something like $400. The guy tried to tell me that my receiver was
struck by lightning, even though the problem occurred one column at a time over a period
of about 2 years. I kept using it until I had lost more than half the columns, and
couldn't read anything on the display. I keep hoping to find a broken one on ebay I
could buy for parts.
Several people have reported the same symptoms. A couple years ago, someone posted
about the same issue, saying something about re-seating one of the ribbon cables (I
think). I took mine apart, planning to re-seat everything, but got distracted, and never
did put it back together. Maybe this will inspire me to try.
