yes, you can for AM. there are two components that are used for AGC in IC TK 10931V: one is the output of AM envelope detection (pin 13) that goes thru a 20k resistor to AGC pin 18, and the second (implemented by Yaesu) takes the raw AM signal from pin 17 and feeds the base of a transistor that controls the voltage level of the first IF amplifier. you get rid of that 20kohm resistor, you got rid of AGC that's in the IC. you find a way to have a constant voltage for the IF ampl., again you got rid of second AGC. remember, you have two ICs TK10931V, for both radios. I know all this stuff 'cause I'm trying to implement AM synchronous detection. so, I kind of studied that circuit and the radio...
