 I agree with your analysis but I want to share what I found  regarding power. From most of the reading I found, the power lock up occurred mostly  in the earlier production units. My unit is from late 05 and when I bought it , I used my reg power supply for the shack . This was a bad idea as I do like to turn that off when not using the receivers and of course that killls the clock on the 5000. I ended up using a brick power supply that put out a solid 13volts under load and that seems to work fine- no lock ups and keeps my clock running.
