If you just want to see the audio waterfall and decode digital modes or CW or SSTV (for example, in USB mode on HF), then you only need to connect the radio's audio output to your computer's audio input, then use a free program like FLDigi or DM-780 (which is part of Ham Radio Deluxe), or EasyPAL (for Digital SSTV), or WSPR (for weak signal propagation analysis), among many others. If you want to scan a wide swath of frequencies, you'll need to buy KE7ATE's software. I haven't tried his software. If you want to manage the radio memories, then you can buy FTBVR5K v2.
