General Info: My effort to use KE7ATE's program was unsuccessful. Perhaps it is because
the PC I tried to use is a small one running a variation of Windows 7; I haven't had time to get back
to trying other computers yet. And the author did not respond to an email.
As far as I can see, my connections were all as directed such as a null modem cable etc.
I did use a USB to serial adaptor due to the absence of the old 9-pin serial RS232 port on newer machines.

If you just want to see the audio waterfall and decode digital modes or CW or SSTV (for example, in USB mode on HF), then you only need to connect the radio's audio output to your computer's audio input, then use a free program like FLDigi or DM-780 (which is part of Ham Radio Deluxe), or EasyPAL (for Digital SSTV), or WSPR (for weak signal propagation analysis), among many others.

If you want to scan a wide swath of frequencies, you'll need to buy KE7ATE's software. I haven't tried his software.

If you want to manage the radio memories, then you can buy FTBVR5K v2. I did buy this, and it seems to work well.
