well its allways possible and recomented to call a child by his name.
VR5000 is just very bad quality, i think at least 50% of those receiver 
are with defect on the display after the years.
there are problem with the ribbon cable of the front panel on newer 
revision.
the receiver frontend isnt really good .. more on the level of a normal 
consumer receiver
The CAT disaster is another (homemade) story,
the funny little antenna switch is another incompetent missdesign.
talking about the antenna input .. an so239 connector for an receiver 
claimed to work up to 2.6Ghz is not really to take serious
the IF output on the newer revision is very poor designed, max dynamic 
out arround 35db

"mine works perfect" is not really an countable expression

i repaired a lot of them .. even owned two of them, but a tip for the 
future: stay away of it and get another brand, ;)
