The best omni antenna for the Air band would be a Ground Plane or a discone antenna. However they are rather large for portable or even mobile use. Very good results you can get with an old dual telescopic TV antenna. Simply adjust the two arms for a total length of about 1.2 meters and use a BNC connector for the coax.
