Yep, the 120 is relatively deaf below 30 MHz.  I can only pull in a 
few of the local power house 50KW AM broadcast stations in my area. 
The kid's portable can pick up more. Others have said it's due to the 
antenna (or need for a better one) and I agree to a certain extent. 
It's not easy designing a radio to cover that much spectrum and be 
sensitive from "DC to Daylight". My opinion is that radio just can't 
do it.

I use a RadShack DX-398 (Sangean ATS-909) for all my SW listening 
using a long wire around the perimiter of my attic.  I've done side 
by side comparisons and the 120 really isn't that good.  If you are 
trying to do SW DXing, I would recommend getting a radio that was 
designed specifically for SW.  If you just want to listen to local AM 
stations, the VR120 shoulf be good enough for the more popular 
stations.
