I built the "japanese" discrete version also listed on the tk120 page 
and it works fine.  Transistor values don't seem to be critical as 
they seem to be used more as a switch then an amplifier.  If things 
don't seem to work right with the transistors you pick, you can lower 
the values of the two base transistors (R4, R5) a bit to drive the 
switch a little harder.  I didn't have to with whatever devices I 
grabbed out of the junk box.
