Hi Bonnie,

Joe's company (active on this list) has some interesting stuff in  
this space and they know a heck of a lot about disk and storage I/O  
optimization -- http://jackrabbit.scalableinformatics.com/. I'm  
looking at the 3U version for internal use myself.
