C/C++ libraries

Hi I am new here, just wondering if anyone come across
C/C++ bioinformatics libraries similar to that of
BioPerl/Java? I am just about to start on a new
project and C is my choice of language as one of the
existing library which I will use was written in C. If
I can find some generic bioinformatics C/C++ libraries
it will be useful and I don't have to re-invent some
of the wheels.
