I'm forwarding this message from David Fitch to wormbase-announce,=20
since I believe it will be of interest to many of you. Lincoln

Dear C. elegans Researcher,

We have a live collection of over 100 different species of rhabditid=20
nematodes related to Caenorhabditis at various phylogenetic levels.=20
Most have been identified to species and can be cultured fairly=20
easily. Several labs already use this collection for comparative=20
studies at molecular, developmental, morphological, and population=20
levels.

We are working on a phylogeny for these nematodes to provide an=20
explicit evolutionary context for such studies (in fact, our=20
phylogeny for Caenorhabditis served an important role in helping=20
identify species for the next genome sequencing projects). We also=20
plan to develop a web-accessible database with lots of information=20
about each species (collection data, taxonomy, morphology, biology,=20
etc., which could be integrated with Wormbase). (A strain=20
synonymization database currently exists, called WSRN, but needs much=20
updating and does not have much data other than strain designations=20
and strain origins.)

Not surprisingly, it takes a significant amount of time and money to=20
develop, improve, and maintain such a resource, as well as to make it=20
accessible to the scientific community. The higher the community=20
interest level, the higher the quality of service can be offered at a=20
lower cost per user. So, we would like to gauge your interest in=20
using this resource in your research. If you might have use for such=20
a resource now or in the foreseeable future, PLEASE send me a very=20
brief e-mail with:

    your name
    your university/dept. affiliation
and a couple of words describing how you might use such a=20
resource.

If you already got this request once before, I apologize--you need=20
not respond again.

Many thanks,
Dave Fitch
