Chemical Reactions

Bear with me, but from my recollection of HS Chemistry, at least when we conducted in-class experiments designed for immediate observation, chemical reactions were immediate, even if they progressed to different stages over time.

Having this in mind, am I correct to believe that if two or more ingredients (for lack of a better term at the moment) are combined and no immediate reaction is noted, that the ingredients are non-reactive with each other? Or is there a possibly of a delayed reaction, and if so, what can a delay depend on?

The reason I ask is because I followed instructions and made an electrolyte solution, followed by the addition of DNA, and when it didn't churn, or fizz, or heat, I was concerned that the experiment was a dud, until I was advised that it could take two weeks to notice a reaction. I'm not a chemist, but two weeks to see a reaction seemed unlikely to me, like I said, unless the process of decay or transfusing has direct bearing on the reaction.

Anyone who'd care to delve into this and help me arrive at a clear scientific determination is welcome to advise. Thanks in advance.
