OBITUARY : Lord Briggs

Leading British historian and educationist who masterfully chronicled=20
the Victorian era and helped to establish the University of Sussex

Lord Briggs was one of the most remarkable academic figures of his time.=20
A pioneering historian whose books on Victorian society opened up large=20
areas of knowledge that other historians neglected. You can read Briggs=20
on Victorian cities, people and things, on steam and transportation,=20
public health and education, science and technology, music and=20
literature, food and drink, sport and public entertainment, books and=20
broadcasting, Chartism and the Channel Islands. He also played a central=20
part in the evolution of the University of Sussex, of which he was=20
vice-chancellor. Under Briggs it was widely dubbed =93Balliol-by-the-Sea=94=

....From 1942 to 1945, Briggs served officially in the Intelligence=20
Corps, but in reality as a cryptographer with the Ultra team at=20
Bletchley Park, an intellectual environment he greatly enjoyed,=20
describing it as his =93second university=94. In 1944, still =93in unifor=
m=94,=20
he was given a fellowship at Worcester College, Oxford, where he turned=20
to teaching PPE. Briggs soon established himself as one of the bright,=20
radical new stars in the Oxford firmament. He became Reader in Recent=20
Social and Economic History in 1950.....
