Official historian of the Secret Intelligence Service who chronicled its=20
first 40 years

For more than 80 years after it was set up in 1909, the existence of the=20
Secret Intelligence Service =97 MI6 =97 was not acknowledged by the Briti=
sh=20
government. It only acquired a legal basis in 1994, and given its=20
culture of secrecy, it was a surprise when, just a decade later, it was=20
announced that its centenary would be marked by an official history.=20
Moreover, the writing of that was to be entrusted not to an Oxbridge=20
academic, but to a professor of history at Queen=92s University Belfast,=20
Keith Jeffery.....
