There was a navy Y-station(s) located at Southwold (Y as in wireless 
intercept) during the second world war as part of the intelligence 
gathering network, including Bletchley Park. From photographs of the 
station on the Imperial War Museum website, the station location has 
been found where surprisingly the main two huts still stand, although 
some of the outlying facilities have subsequently fallen into the sea. 
There is also a recording on YouTube of an intercept recording taken at 
the station. The huts are known locally as the Navy huts although no one 
knew what they were used for.

In gathering information, it has come to light that there may have been 
2 stations at Southwold as another location is given as Gun Hill in 
Southwold, which is partially confirmed by one of the Imperial War 
Museum photographs. The two locations would therefore be separated by 
1-2 miles.

My questions are: where there two separate locations for the station, 
presumably intercepting different data? What were the stations 
intercepting? i.e was it direction finding, data gathering or any other; 
and finally when was the station set up? From local information, the Gun 
Hill one may have been set up as early as 1940.

I realise that very little information is available on these secret 
stations, but thought that someone may know a little more than I have 
been able to dig out.
