Robert, my understanding is that most Enigma machines used a 4.5 volt battery which contained three zinc carbon dry cells connected in series. The one Naval Enigma I have seen had a pair of terminals which were labelled 4 volts (such as would be produced by two lead-acid cells in series). I presume these were used when the Enigma was permanently installed on board a ship. The lamps were nominally rated at 3.5 volts. Regards, Julian.
