In the news:
"...Specialists from Bletchley Park in Buckinghamshire were asked to decipher
the inscription on the Shepherd's Monument at Shugborough...Experts now think
the code is a message from a sect called Priory of the Sun...The work was led
by Oliver and Sheila Lawn, a couple in their 80s who were based at the
code-breaking centre during World War II...The code-breakers revealed on
Thursday that they believe the cipher is a message from the obscure sect, which
is likely to stand for 'Jesus (As Deity) Defy'..." --

"...As WW2 Enigma codebreakers know, in order to break the message, the key
setting has to be obtained. What none of the other proposed solutions to the
Shepherds Monument inscription had done is discover a key. This is what the
anonymous author then sets out to do. Furthermore, he claims to have discovered
that the key is actually visible, over and over again, on the monument itself.
By careful inspection, he says, the key 1223 is revealed. After anagramming,
a plain text message emerges: JESUS H DEFY..." --

Well quite. I have my own candidate solution, produced using the well-known
lexical polygram to unigram substitution system, yielding:

Distance Of Unicity Obstructs Solution; Vain Attempts Via Vaporous Myths.
