Re: Sovjet successor of the ENIGMA

There is much we don't know about the FIALKA. The knowledge we have
mainly comes from former Warsaw Pact services in the former DDR and
Poland. Seemingly the machine was used by all Warsaw Pact forces for
internal communications and for inter communication between the these
forces. I have some information that also indicate that it might have
been used on some Soviet diplomatic circuits in the late 1960's.

Looking at the technology and correlating information from interviews
with former Warsaw Pact users I would guess that the design of the
FIALKA dates to the early 1960's. One DDR operator give about 1965 as
the first introduction of this machine.

The machine was known to NATO forces and it probably will have been
given a code name.
