I discussed this point with Ralph when we were going over the details of the two Enigmas recovered from U-85: sunk in April 1942. I'm unable to find my original notes but recall that the date of entry into service of C/Gamma occurred approximately fifteen months after M4 appeared on the scene, which would put C/Gamma in use from about June-July of 1943. A small sampling I know but, along with Enigmas M2946 and M3131, 15 of the 16 regular wheels on board U-85 were recovered along with the two Betas and two 'thin' B's installed in the machines. It may be significant that no Gamma or UKWC was found! http://home.comcast.net/~dhhamer/u-85.htm Back in 2001 in email exchanges with John Harper of BP's Bombe Rebuild project I said: "Reference our earlier discussion of cross matching Greek wheel/'thin' UKW pairs - discussion with Ralph and the other members of CSG reveals that the Kriegsmarine made quite extensive use of Beta/C and Gamma/B pairings."
