The Times July 24, 2006 Letters to the Editor Secret heroes ------------- Sir, There was a third Petard volunteer who swam to U559, Thomas Brown, aged 16 (letter, July 20). He was the one who got back with the documents, and was promptly sent home to "safety" when the authorities realised his age. He died two years later, attempting to rescue his four-year-old sister from the burning family home. His mother had to collect his George Medal, without ever knowing what it was for. In 2002 two memorials were created, one in the centre of Tamworth primarily to Colin Grainger, the other at the Saville Exchange in North Shields, primarily to Thomas Brown. Tony Fasson has been left in the shadows, so it would be appropriate for a memorial to be created in his home town. M. WESTON Burnopfield, Co Durham Sir, The Petard went to the scrapyard long before her importance was known, but Tamworth has an estate of streets named with a Petard theme. Surely the most fitting tribute now would be to name one of the new destroyers being ordered for the Royal Navy after Petard in honour of the vessel and her crew.
