My Swiss friend was speaking of the period when the NEMA system was 
still in official use in Switzerland - between 1947 and 1963 or so.

After being set aside for 30 years and then being sold off to 
collectors / dealers, NEMA have gone around the world.  I bought two of 
the war reserve model myself.

My understanding is that one NEMA was sent from Switzerland to the UK, 
to become a part of the 'stock' available to the Diplomatic Wireless 
Service. This would have been an official transfer.

My guess is that sometime after 1947, a machine that was written off 
(maybe 'accidentally destroyed' under the wheels of a truck?) was then 
quietly transferred to the UK.  This is pure speculation of course.

RAF Cypher machines?  Nothing new in as yet.
