In Hut 8 he made major contributions to breaking the German Navy's 4-wheel Enigma cyphers, known as "Shark" to the British. He is also credited with decyphering a message that located the German battlecruiser SCHARNHORST at sea, resulting in her destruction in the Battle of North Cape.
